Before and After Oral Surgery FAQs

We know having surgery can be overwhelming and there is a lot covered during a consultation, so it is easy to forget something. We’ve compiled a list of commonly asked questions for before and after your oral surgery procedures, but please don’t hesitate to reach out to our office with any additional questions. We’re happy to help!

We are open Monday-Thursday from 8:00 AM-4:30 PM and Wednesdays & Friday from 8:00 AM-2:00 PM. Patients may schedule appointments during this time. Our team is also available by phone to answer your questions or concerns.

If you’ve recently had surgery and have concerns that you’d like to speak with Dr. Nesbitt about, please call us at 980-435-4600 at any time and follow the prompts to speak with a provider. If you are having a medical emergency, it is important to seek immediate help in the emergency room.

Life happens. We understand that schedules change and the unexpected happens. If you need to change or cancel your appointment, please call us right away to reschedule. We kindly request 48 hours notice for cancellations or reschedules. Cases that involve a separate anesthesiologist may require more notice to cancellations or reschedules- this information will be provided to you at the time of booking your appointment.

If you cancel your appointment less than 24 hours in advance, you may be charged a cancellation fee of $50.

Please complete the online patient registration in advance and bring insurance, ID and any co-pays or deductibles. Additionally, many patients find it helpful to bring a list of current medications and questions so we can review any concerns during your appointment.

If you are being sedated, it is also important to bring a responsible adult who must remain on-site during your procedure and drive you home after your surgery.

In most cases, you cannot eat or drink anything from midnight the night before your surgery. If your procedure only requires local anesthesia, you may be allowed to have a light meal up to one or two hours in advance. Please be sure to thoroughly brush and floss prior to your appointment, but only use a small amount of water to rinse.

Yes, please take your usual medications as directed the morning of your surgery. If you take aspirin, Vitamin E, or Warfarin, you will be asked to stop the medication a few days before your procedure.

Wear comfortable, loose clothing to your procedure. Button-up or open-collared shirts are often preferred. If you experience swelling after the procedure, loose attire is easier to change.

You will be given more specific instructions related to your procedure. However, general oral surgery post-care includes:

  • Having someone to drive you home following the surgery, especially if sedative medication is used
  • Taking pain relievers and antibiotics as recommended to stay on top of your pain and avoid infections. We recommend proactively alternating Tylenol and Motrin. Also consider the use of Exparel for wisdom teeth extractions to minimize the likelihood of needing narcotic pain medication
  • Using ice packs or frozen peas to minimize swelling and discomfort
  • Avoid rinsing your mouth for 24 hours
  • Following a soft food diet for the first few days after your procedure
  • Not smoking or using a straw

Please remember that some discomfort and minor bleeding are normal. However, if you experience severe pain or excessive bleeding, please contact us right away. Call 980-435-4600.
